Flooding in the UK

Climate breakdown will make flooding in the UK worse.

We've already seen devastating floods hit much of the country including the Midlands and Yorkshire, leaving communities struggling to cope. We desperately need greater protection against future floods.

Visit our flood map to see which areas are most at risk.

Trees – a natural flood defence?

Right now, UK communities are facing the reality of climate chaos, like flooding – most recently in the Midlands. Now that MPs have declared a climate emergency, it's time for action.

Trees help reduce flooding by slowing the flow of water and helping it soak into the ground. We need more trees, so help us demand action to double tree cover across the UK.

How can we stop flooding?

Back in 2016 the UK government pledged £15 million for natural flood defences in England, following our campaign for better flood management, and the Welsh government has subsequently allocated £2 million in Wales.

But to defend the UK from floods and extreme weather government must do more, including:

  • Invest more in flood defences, both natural (such as doubling tree cover) and man-made.
  • Tackle climate change at root – stop burning fossil fuels and power up with clean energy.
